Blog Tour - Day 7
Today we're visiting a good friend of mine. A few... Ah, some time ago I reviewed her amaaaazing book and posted it here. She saw the Wandering Wizard when he was in first draft, and helped me turn him into the published story you've read.
~checks compass~
This would be easier if I understood how to use it, and knew where I was going...
She interviewed me for the tour, and I hope you enjoy checking out ML John's blog.

IWU Interview with Lorne Oliver
This is my first ever blog interview. I am so happy to be here.
Can you tell us a little bit about your book?
Red Island takes a look at both sides of the hunt for a serial killer. The main character is Sgt. Reid who won’t let anyone know his name, is confused about the state of his marriage, and is haunted by something he did in his past. He wakes from a dream at the same time as being called to the scene of the first homicide in Prince Edward Island in the past twenty years or so. Reid and other members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police begin an investigation that churns up more victims with no clues.
On the other side of the coin Ben Cooper has grown up on the island destined to be a killer. You get to see from when he was 8 years old being picked on and forming his own world in his mind to when he starts peeping, raping, and now killing.
What about this story made you have to write it?
I liked the idea of showing how someone could become a serial killer and what is in his mind without having him be the hero. Police officers have a hard job, especially since many people can see it from their view with all the red tape they have to go through. I don’t think the bad guy should be the hero, but a lot of times they are seen that way.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned during the creation of this book?
I had the opportunity to interview members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police so I learned a lot of what real police do compared to the TV and movie cops.
What was the hardest part to write?
The hardest parts were the fine details. The locations are real. There is actually a Blooming Point beach with a wooded area and a rough bush trail cutting through it where the first victim is found. This is an old abandoned house where another victim is found. Keeping everything as real as possible within the world of fiction took a lot of notes.
What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Honestly I am constantly writing. No matter what I am doing my head is always working on what comes next until I am ready to explode and I have to sit and write. But when my mind actually rests I like watching movies, though my mind is looking for new ideas, cooking, and playing with my two wonderful kids. They are getting to the age where they don’t need Dad around any more so I take the time I can get.
Can you share a little of what you are working on now?
Right now I am working on the second book in the Sgt. Reid series. The tentative title for this one is, Forever Screaming. It is going to be a little darker. The crime is a little more heinous than the brutal killing of young women like in Red Island. It is a subject that is actually hard to write personally, but it’ll be well worth it once it is done.
What advice would you give a new writer?
For anyone who is thinking of publishing online for the first time to do their work long before they actually publish. I couldn’t wait and just wanted to get it out there. Now, 2 months later, I have realized how much work should have been done before hand: building a following on Twitter, guest blogs to get the name out, finding reviewers ahead of time so that there are reviews right away. Do the work, do the research, then publish.

Hmmm...
As you may known, per my last post, my NaNo this year is a modern retelling of Fairy Tales. What you might not know, is that I love and adore fairy tales. Always have, always will. There's just something about them. I might enjoy Mystery's, Super Hero's and Fantasy.... But I'll drop them all for a fairy tale. So seeing from another blog, You Are The Unicorn Of My Dreams, posted about the new Snow White movie, I jumped at it. I'm far from a Kristen Stewart, in fact I don't think she can act at all. BUT, I'll still go and see it, most likely in the theater.
------------------------------------
Tuesday I'll post another teaser from my Current NaNo. So far, I've written Snow White, Jack and the Bean Stalk, Little Red RidingHood and am working on Cinderella right now. Of those, post in a comment which one you'd like to have a blurb from!!

Nano, day... ah..
I don't know. I just know I should have been at 15k.... AND I AM!!! That includes the fact that I scrapped my first story. Kinda. I'm working to up my words to a point that I can actually drop those, but... Right now I'm keeping that 5000 words. I worked hard for them, and that story isn't dead... Just, isn't talking to me.
Now... As a bonus, I'm including a teaser to the new story. ^^
Thanks for stopping by!!!!!
Now... As a bonus, I'm including a teaser to the new story. ^^
Once upon a time... Words synonomus with fairy tales and happy endings. You've heard all the stories, of prinice's that sweep in at the last minute and rescue the princess from certain death, while manging to look dashing the whole time.
Let me tell you, they tend to take a very differnt when your standing on the inside looking out at one. Very, very different.
Here's an example of what you know, and what really happened.
There once was a young girl, a princess in fact, who's mother passed away when she was young. The girls father remarried a beautiful, but vain, woman. Then a few years later, the girls father died. Everything was good until the prinicess matured and became a stunning beauty. This insulted the queen, who saw her place as the 'fairest of them all' to be in jepoardy. So she had the young woman taken out into the woods and killed. Or that's what she thought. In reality, the man was too "moral" to actually kill a young woman for now reason, so instead abandoned her in the wilderness. After wandering for a while, she was taken in by 7 little men and in trade for cooking and clean, given a place to sleep and protection.
However, after a while the queen found out the truth and set out to kill the young woman herself. She tried three times, suffication, poison on the skin and finally, poison by mouth. [need actual words/phrases]
Each time, there was a side effect to the posion she didn't antisipate, a loophole of sorts. And each time she was able to survive at the lastt minute. The final time, it was a prince from another land who fell in love with her and swept her off to his kingdom.
You know how it ends. And that, is my new intro. ^^ I'm excited and feeling a little like I'm gonna need to send thank you notes to ABC, as they've now inspired 2 NaNo Novels... With the only shows I even watch there too.
That's a pretty cute little story, but there's a lot more that you've never heard about along the way. A lot more that happened. How do I know? No, I'm not 'that girl'. I've never even met her. No, but I was able to 'peek' into her life and see how it all really went down.

As of now.... NaNoWriMo Update
I have been... Ahead and behind. Tuesday, I was way ahead. Then, somehow my bottom fell out and... The story isn't working with me well. I've had to change part of how I write, and instead... Just write whatever comes to mind, not in order for sure. I don't do that. Its not east. Blah...
Anywho.. Here's an except of what I've been working on.
A History of Amalathea
-- From the Book of Ages, Vol. 1,
The city of Amalathea was born the day after the great fire... The day so much of the world was taken up in flames. Only a few places survived that day, spared by [another word for freak] rainstorms, that eventually reached the rest of the world to sooth the raging beast. As the storms stilled and calmed, the few thousand survivors found the earth covered in soot and ash.
Somehow, while the rest of the world was trying to gather its self up and move forward, the city of Amalathea was [another word for born.] The first building was said to rise out of the ground, tall and black as the night, it is said to have shined out, as if to state its claim to the rest of the world.
Proclaiming, 'I Am Here'.
Within five years, it was well on its way to being called 'The Grand City of Amalathea.' In the center of the city there stood a tree, young and still somewhere between sapling and [word for a tree after sapling]. No one knew where the tree had come from, it had simply always been there, somehow vital to the safety and prosperity of the city.
Over the next 100 years, it had settled to keep within the forest that had regrown around city. As sacred as the tree in the center of town, it wasn't until a new mayor took power, that that changed. [bob] Kjersti sought a different path for the city of Amalathea...
Despite the peace of the city, he started a campaign to remove the Roma, or Gypsy's as he called them, from Amalathea. Claiming they would bring only cons and lies, he started to bring charged against them and sought to discredit every good they had brought about. It took him almost 50 years, but in the end the families were removed and sent to live in what he had dubbed, the Gypsy Forest.
While Amalathea continued to prosper and grow, the removal of the Roma created a stark realization in everyone. It took another two generations before their being a part of the city became only a story told to children. The Kjersti family became one of [another word for prosperity] and power. For 7 generations things continued as they had been since the family first took control of the city. An ancestor of the first was the first to step into the new world and see what would change the face of the city, and the world, forever.
His reasoning had been sound and with the Roma 'out of sight, out of mind' expanding the city made sense. Through this, the forest started to disappear. Slowly, woodsman started to cut down the trees that encircled the city. It moved so [another word for slow], that most people didn't even notice that the trees were missing, until months had gone by.
Historians have recorded that when in its prime, the Gypsy Forest held trees more beautiful than any man had seen before. Men of science studied the trees, seeking to learn more about them. Their discovery of how unique the trees were, went largely unnoticed in the pursuit of enlarging the city, of making it as grand as they believed it was meant to be...
It wasn't until most of the forest was cleared away, that the people realized how stark and empty the land felt then. Seeking to reclaim that beauty, they built monuments and [another word for grand] buildings.
Thus it was almost 500 years after its founding, that the city we know and love now, was born.

NaNo is HERE!!!
That's right, NaNo has started and writers around the globe are battling out in word wars and working to create new worlds and tell a yet untold story.

Wha? I'm a writer.
If you'd like to be a writing buddy, feel free to add me and I'll add you back. KCarey is my name.
Now.. Onto the updates.
By 3 am, I had hit the daily number of 1671. It took longer then I'd hoped as I had a few distractions...
1, character wouldn't give me his name.
2, found out the people are 'Roma' in heritage, and I had to do some research and grab a translator..
3, one character refused to tell me his name... He was [Snookie] for a little while.
I'm gonna give you a little teaser from my story... The intro. ^^

She stared down at the body, wondering how it all had happened as she finished the cigarette. It hadn't been the plan to kill anyone... But then, it never was. Maybe it had been fate... The people about the room were still gasping, unable to believe that this had happened just a few moments ago.
Adriana stood up and dropped the mostly wasted [nother word for cigarette] to the fdloor, using the toe of her shoes to grind it away into the ground. She'd need to leave... Need to not be here when the police arrived. There was no way to explain everything to the police, no way to explain why he'd had to die. Turning away, the blue eyed woman was soon slipping through a back door, escaping into the night...
A night that was filled by trees. The hotel sat in the middle of the city and had for just over 15 years... How had...
---
Emmanuel Tober stood at the front entrance to his grand achievement. It was like nothing else that anyone had built. Closing his eyes, the tall man remembered just how the idea of it had come to him, almost as if it had been... Spoken, by the building its self. He'd never gotten into that with the others. Hadn't wanted to try and explain it, just implied it was something special and original. Tomorrow, it would open and the world would know the beauty of Amalathea, the shining beacon of what the great city truely was.
He headed up the starecase and toward the room he had been using for as long as he was able. The spiral starecase wound its way through the center, up toward the penthouse suite. That too was a marvle ntil its self. It was what he hadn't been able to explain, beyond actually building it himself.
Sinking down into the plush couch, Emmanuel worked to calm his speeding heart. Tomorrow... But, was it actually finished? Why did it seem as if there was so much more he could have known about, before actally building it. So much more to understand. These thought filled his mind as slowly, he drifted off into a dreamless sleep.
Upon opening his eyes, the stark darkness surprised him. Shoudln't it be light out? He felt well rested, there was no reason for it to feel this...
"Where in the hell am I?" A voice spoke angerly only a short distance away.
Moving carefully, he was soon crouching behind a bush, watching as a young woman glared at the darkness as if it was offending her. Her dress confused him some, seeming similar to some of the rising mobsters about Amlathea, but at the same time... Not quite right. And on a woman no less. That, wasn't at all the way it should be. For several long moments, he debated moving to talk to her, unsure on the safety of the idea. The choice was taken away from her a few moments later, when the young woman turned at a light that came from no where and vanished with it before a single breath could cross his lips.
Standing up, the architect had a sensation that scared him. It would be a very, very long time... Before he ever saw his grand building again.

Flash Fiction: Start Living Again
This is a blurb I wrote about an OC of mine, Ezio. There's more infos on him at my dA,
Chloe had told him it might
help, and while Ezio really wasn't all that sure... He headed into the store
anyway. Looking around, a flood of
memories started to wash over him as he thought of those two little blond girls
that had ruled his heart for so long. A
smile came to his lips as he moved through the store and noticed all the things
they had loved and enjoyed. Both had
managed to be fairly girly, if in slightly different ways.
Maria... She had loved not
just fashion, Barbie’s and the like, but had adored coloring and creating. At 18, she'd still had the Barbie’s, but used
them to sew her own miniature designs and style them. He'd been helping her with sketching out
clothes and her own fashions. She'd
actually dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. Standing in the middle of the Barbie aisle,
he picked up an outfit she would have loved.
At the end of the aisle, the
young man stopped and stared as something caught his eye and he moved toward
it. Mariah on the other hand... Her wave
of creativeness had from nature and all things flowers. While still managing to be insanely girly,
she'd simply loved to be out in the garden, planting and growing. Then, after they'd blossomed, at 16, she
would carefully prune them and make some amazing flower arrangements. Arrangements that he could still at times,
see in his mind’s eye. Ezio picked up
the children’s 'flower' kit and smiled at it.
Starting back toward the
front, the black haired man stopped once to pick up a gift bag and tissue
paper, before paying for it.
Little over an hour later, he
smiled as the bag was handed over to a worker for the Christmas Wish
group. Somehow, it had actually been
helpful. "Should have known better then
to doubt Chloe." He mumbled to
himself, before heading out into the cold Chicago weather and slipping on his
bike, ready to start home.
Maybe, it was time to really
figure out how to start living in the present.

Why I Write, Pt. 2
I had to run an errand this morning, which is code for pulling on enough clothes to get by and stumbling out. While I normally avoid the radio, when I need to be awake I'll put it on a local morning show. While listening, a commercial came on that made me grin like an idiot.
Radio Commercial: Ever wish you wore a cape and could jump buildings in a single bound?
Me: Yes
RC: Ever wish you were a pirate, sailing the seven seas?
Me: YES
RC: Ever wish you were at magic school, honing you powers?
Me: Yes!! ~to my self~ Whaaaat? I have an active imagination!!
How many out there, would have responded in the same way? I mean, really? We're writers for a reason. Our imaginations are open and active, and we have pictured ourselves doing things beyond our control.
Did you ever read a book and lose yourself in it? Or perhaps your more like myself... I used to picture myself in the story that happens after the book ends. No wonder FanFiction was my first try in writing.

5 Random Questions... +1
Lori M. Lee offered to ask some questions of those who replied to her blog. ^^ Here's mine.
1. Was there ever a time when you were frightened for your life?
3 times. One is slightly personal, and it wasn't so much death.. As just the future I was scared of. The other two times, were car accidents. One, was when my breaks went out in Down Town and I ran into a building. For a few seconds, I was... Not so much frightened, as prepared to die. The other time I was smashed into by a car. We were both somewhat to blame, but it scared me as he nearly smashed into.. Well, me.
2. Name one thing that not many people know about you?
I have... Odd, but semi genuine worries about my sanity. Mostly, I'm scared that everything in my head, my imagination and creativeness, will someday overwhelm me and I'll lose the ability to release it.
3. Mortal combat between Prince Eric (the little mermaid) and Prince Philip (sleeping beauty). Who would win?
Prince Philip, hands down. For a few reasons. One... Sleeping Beauty beats out Little Mermaid, any day. 2, he's cuter. 3, I think his battle was more epic. 4..... Cause I say so.
4. Which apocalypse would you rather face: a natural one (the forces of nature rip apart the world), a nuclear one (world war 3), or a zombie one?
I'd rather face Nature. Offers the most chance of survival I think.
5. Can you fake accents?
Nope. I can enjoy them... And I can pickup pieces of how others sound, but it always sounds like... Me.
I stole the next one. I just... If you know me, you'll understand.
3. Spiderman and Batman get drunk together and wind up in bed. Who made the first move?
I think it would have been a whole bunch of.. Small, subtle moves on each side. Then, as the drinking ensued... I see Superman leaning in for that first kiss, but Batman taking the lead in moving it into more.
Hope you enjoyed these as much as I did. ^^ I think... I'm going to ask the same of any viewers out there.
Reply with a comment, including the word Randomocity, and I'll ask you 5 questions to post in your own blog. Don't forget to post your journals to my comments, so I can check them out.

Why I Write....
So.. Hildred over at Musings of a Procrastinating Author, asked this question... And after like, a week of planning on answering, I finally sat down to write out the answer... Of course, being me, its written on the fly and with no planning or direction.
Why I write....
To offer my mind an escape. A lot of crap has happened in... Well, in the last 7 years, but since February, life hasn't been even close to easy. Even when I write for school and its a paper I could care less about and am only working to get to that.. 1000 words or 3-4 pages in length, I still use it to escape.
To let my brain calm down. I know this sounds like the first, but its actually not. I have a highly active brain at times, imagination likes to run on high. And I firmly, without having researched or gathered any proof, believe that creativity and insanity can be one in the same, and writing is one way I... Release everything that's gathered up in my head and let it loose. A, release of pressure, if you will.
Its a dream. I've always wanted to have a book published, and I know despite it all.. I do in fact have the talent to get a book out there and enjoyed by... People.
To fulfill a promise... This isn't exactly the reason... But, I know my mom believed I had at least one book in me and I'd like to see that happen.

Nanoites
I was reading Angela's blog and read the words 'Gypsy Forest', and it really caught my eye. So much, that I started a file called 'Nano Idea's', and my plan is to just write down words and thoughts that catch my eye and when November happens, pick an already started story or writing one from scratch.
I'm a lousy planner, really am. I can't get anyplace on time... I'm either early or late. I say to myself, 'I'll shower at 11... Head out around 12... That'll work.' Next thing I know, I'm showering at 12:30 and getting out at 1:30 and miss out on the shopping I'd planned on doing and arriving at my friends about 2:30, I buy a super late lunch and arrive at 2:15 and wait in the car 20 minutes.
That is just an example... Sometimes I get out on time, and mismanage while I'm out... Or I can't even get ready on time and end up mismanaging at home.
Last year for Nano... I started with:
Time Traveling Killer...
Steampunk...
Joakim is the Hero.
Managed to make a 50,000 word novel out of that.
So... I'm leaning a little more toward just... Having a list again and making it work. Seems to do well for me.

The imago incident
^^ Another challenge here from Rachel's Platform Building Campaign.
Write a blog post in 200 words or less, excluding the title. It can be in any format, whether flash fiction, non-fiction, humorous blog musings, poem, etc. The blog post should:
- include the word "imago" in the title
- include the following 4 random words: "miasma," "lacuna," "oscitate," "synchronicity,"
If you want to give yourself an added challenge (optional and included in the word count), make reference to a mirror in your post.
For those who want an even greater challenge (optional), make your post 200 words EXACTLY!
I think I was able to hit everything, and use the words properly. Hope you enjoy.
"There's a what?"
"A lacuna... And you call yourself a writer..."
I glared at him, "What are you talking about?"
Watching him roll his eyes, he continued, "Lacuna... Your book has a gap.. Huge, gaping hole in the storyline. You had that great and amazing miasma... Then the the story just... Oscitated open and everything fell into this hole."
Sitting down, I rested my head in my hands. He had to be doing this on purpose, just to get at me. Yes, he's a friend and yes, he has the connections needed to help in getting my manuscript into the right publisher... But he was also arrogant and enjoyed showing off to people. Based on the words, I could easily guess that 'Oscaitate', meant some kind of hole. Miasma could only be talking about the huge foreboding my main character had had about the assassination.
"It wasn't a hole, it was synchronicity. Did you like, stop reading it there? Did you miss the mirror image scene where everything changed?"
It was hard to hide the smile. He hadn't finished the story and really hadn't been prepared for me to use that word on him. I had finally managed a victory.
This isn't from anything and is pretty much, just a random blurb... It's what came to mind.
I'm number 63 on the Linky List.
