What I Want...

I think I've figured out part of what I'm looking for in a guy, and why its so hard for me.

We all hear about how romance novels and fairy tales have ruined our expectations on men. And, I enjoy a good romance novel or fairy tale... But, those aren't the kinda guys I look for.  They're too perfect, to 'Oh, I caught me the uncatchable guy'.

No, I want a guy like... Philip Marlow, Mal Reynolds, Harry Dresden... The good hearted, hard boiled, teddy bear fighter.

The man whose flaws are obvious, who makes mistakes, but learns from them. He's not against being caught, and he'll be yours for life...

In some ways, what I want may be even harder to find in reality.  Which explains my singleness [if you don't count my three BFF's, who are almost like having three wives... Without the good stuff.]

Oh well, if it's meant to happen, it'll happen. Some day.

Old Time Detectives...

:D  My heroes!

Lately, instead of watching TV [which I'm behind on anyway], I've been listening to the Podcasts of Old Time Radio Detectives.  Why?  Because there's something about the hard boiled detectives that makes me grin.  And, I adore Mysteries.

What makes them so great?  Lets start with where it all began for me...

Nate the Great...

Nate goes around his neighborhood solving crimes with his dog Sludge, thinking over pancakes for both of them and generally instilling a love of mysteries in young kids.  With his creepy neighbor and her five black cats named Hex... Annie, who's dog Fang is as big as they are... and other that help or hinder him along the way.

That was my introduction to mysteries. A mixture of Sherlock Holmes and the vintage hard boiled detectives of Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade.

From there, I picked up several other mysteries like Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and even the Rover Boys.  They led me too Agatha Christie, Mary Higgins Clark and a million other authors out there who write a million variations of mysteries.

Several years ago, my Godmother let me take home some Old Time Radio programs to try out.  Red Skeleton, Our Miss Brooks, Suspense, Philo Vance, Philip Marlowe, and a few others.  Of those, only Philo Vance left me cold.  He was too polished to be enjoyable as a detective.  Everyone liked him and he was just... :P Not fun.  On the flip side, Philip Marlowe was perfect in my eyes.  Always working for the greater good, even if it might sometimes work against the law.

As an example, a young kid is pushed into a bad situation where he kills someone.  But because of the other circumstances of it all, Marlowe felt the kid didn't deserve to end up in jail.  He lets the one who pushed it all to happen take the blame.

On the flip side, if he felt that the young kid was too far gone, he wouldn't approve of covering up the crime.

It was because of this, that I loved what he did.  Strong moral conviction was important, along with believing the police were needed when things went bad.

This is why mysteries are my favorite, more so the Hard Boiled Private Dick type stories.

Happily Ever After or Why I Like Action Flicks

Growing up, I've always loved me a good fairy tale.  Something about them just rocks.  Plus, they have the same ending.  Happily ever after.  And I like that in my stories.

Which comes to why I adore action movies.  Good guys fighting bad guys and the good guys always win.

In horror, you tend to have bad guys survive, while the 'good' kids just manage to live to the end.

In drama, you often have lovers who never really talk, and near the end one of them ends of killing themselves.  Or they do talk, but one of them dies anyway.  Most of the time, its just that one of them dies... Only important part.

In comedy, its a crapshoot.  Sometimes you get a good one but all too often, its just bathroom humor and low end comedy.  Not something I enjoy.

In thrillers, you find another crapshoot.  Sometimes they're well made and a good mystery, but other times they're only a little better than a horror film.

And in action films you tend to have good guys and bad guys.  Sure, some of the good ones are doing bad things, but they're also the kind of people with honor.  Not easy to have honor when you're all evil.

Action films can be more horror driven, thriller driven, even comedy driven.  And strong storylines aren't that common.  Most of the time its about the good guys stopping the bad guys from doing something.  During the course of that stopping, fist fights, knife fights, gun fights, car fights and many other types will appear.  Explosions happen, impossible feats of physics...

Then the good guys kick butt and walk/ride off into the sunset, alive to fight another day.

Sure, if the bad guys win you'll see them next time.  Its like Arkham Asylum... A revolving door for the baddies.

A good movie to understand what I'm talking about is a rather bad one called Jake Speed.  Not easy to find, no one very famous is in it.  But no matter how weird the good guy is, he's always good.  Or listen to some Philip Marlow radio shows.  Again, you'll see that kind of person.

They always do what's right.  Sometimes, it goes against the law but those times are for a specific purpose.  Say, a young kid was apart of something and sticking him in jail would do more harm than good.  Our good guy will keep him out of jail, while making sure those guilty are punished.

Please understand, there's nothing wrong with the genres mentioned above.  I just don't enjoy them as often.  Sure, there are exceptions to almost any rule, but for me those are just that... Exceptions.

Blurb of a Post

Blogger goofed and posted today's entry, yesterday.

Oh well, I'll make something up for you.  ^^

I know!!  I'll post something I've written here for you to enjoy.

Now, this as the CTC29 challenge from day 22.

Day 22: Following In Their Words
Take the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty and rewrite it, borrowing the voice and style of a famous writer. In case you're unfamiliar with the rhyme, here it is:
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.
Note that you don't have to write this piece in rhyme or even as a poem. Focus on taking the story from the rhyme and crafting it in the style of the author you choose. To flex your muscles, do the exercise a second time using another author writer with a very different voice than the one you chose the first time.

And here is what I wrote.  Its short and weird, but I like it. Follows in the footsteps of Raymond Chandler, who created the best Noir Detective ever... Philip Marlow.

It started like any other day.  The odd ice was empty when I arrived, but business had been slow for weeks now.

Then she walked in my door.  Long legs stretched up into a round body… A curse only a Humpty could pull off.

“I need your help.”  She breathed, leaning on my desk.

“What’s wrong toots?”

“Its my husband.  He… He had a great fall.”

Everyone had head about the fall.  Dumpty was in pieces they said.

“Way I heard it, Kingsman and Horses was on the case.”

“Please.  They can’t put him back together again.”  She looked at me, and I saw a glint in her eyes.  “No one can.”

I could see she was trouble.

“Then, what do you want?”

“He’s in pieces, but I need to know who caused the fall.”

A sharp laugh escaped my lips.  “Lady, you know who.  I ain't some quack you can use as a frame up guy.”  Leaning close, I smiled.  “You caused the fall babe and now you want to make sure your tracks are covered.”

She was fast on the draw, but I was quicker. “Turn yourself in toots.”

“I”ll share it all with you.  Money, power… Love.”

“Sorry, not interested.”

Two shots rang out and she crumpled to the ground.

Life poured out of her like a spilled inkwell.

Picking up the phone, I called Detective Piper.

“Ms. Humpty just confessed to the fall of her husband… No, send the wagon… She’s in pieces.”

As I said, its not polished or anything, and it moves pretty fast.  But for a short I wrote while getting my back pain zapped and frozen, then in a car.. I think its pretty good.
