Interview: Lorna George

The lovely Lorna George has a book that's just been released, The Redwood Rebel. Below is an interview with her. Beyond that, you'll find info on how to go out and PICK UP her book!!! Which, btw, I demand you do. Now... Ok, after you read her interview. But then! Go out and grab it!

First off, I’ve preordered the book already and checked out the summery…

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.

… But tell me, what is it all about?

It circles mainly the story of Naomi, a prisoner and disgraced knight, as she tries to take back the country of Ffion from the evil Princess Adrienne.

Naomi finds herself accidentally married to the King of a neighbouring country, something neither of them are particularly happy about, all the while being hunted down by harpies, mercenaries, and Lord Cygnus, a dark sorcerer and Adrienne’s lover.

At its heart it’s very much a traditional fantasy story, good versus evil and all that, but I’d like to think I’ve put my own spin on it at the same time. I think Naomi’s character alone has given it a kick it might otherwise have been lacking.

What drew you to writing and why this story?

I suppose the best way to describe it is as a sort of love letter to the fantasy genre. I grew up reading stories about magic, dragons, princesses, and knights, and I loved them. I spent a lot of my childhood –and actually, my adult life, too- with my head up in the clouds, dreaming about adventures and magical lands, and when it first occurred to me to write them down? Well. That was it for me, really.

The main premise of The Redwood Rebel is that I took a lot of old fantasy tropes and a lot of pre-conceptions about character roles and had a little play with them. The dragon is in fact the “prince” (he’s actually a king, but you get what I mean), the princess is evil, the virgin sacrifice is the knight, but thinks the whole concept of virginity is stupid, and as the story progresses even these roles become questionable.

It was a lot of fun for me to write, so I really hope that enjoyment will be passed along to readers, too.

How many cover ideas did you go through?

Well, honestly the scene that’s depicted on the cover has been in my head since the very beginning. It’s such a pivotal moment in the books, and despite not mentioning this to my illustrator, Juliette Brocal, it was still the scene she picked to work with after I sent her the manuscript. She’s very clever that way, and it was wonderful to work with someone who was as enthusiastic about the work as me. That’s a lot rarer than you might think.
In the aftermath of civil war, the people of Ffion starve. The trade has dwindled, the harvest has failed, and all power belongs to the cruel and corrupt. Those few who could have fled the forest continent for other lands, but most are trapped by their poverty and love of their homeland, with little hope for change.

Far beneath Chloris Castle, the rebel Naomi has been incarcerated since the tyrannical Princess Adrienne stole the Redwood Throne. Starved of light and warmth for the past four years, she has had only her rage and determination to keep her going as she both fears and yearns for death to claim her at last.

In a violent sweep of fate, she is dragged back into the light once more, the Princess and her Councillor hoping to use her as a pawn against the powerful Dragon King of Koren. Faced with an almost impossible choice, Naomi strikes a deal with her captors that will set her free at last.

Unfortunately, she soon finds she has taken on much more than she bargained for.

Is there one book that inspired you more than any other?

I wouldn’t say one in particular. I wouldn’t be doing this without Terry Pratchett though, just because his work showed me that there was nothing to be embarrassed about for writing fantasy. There’s a lot of snobbery attached to the genre, unfortunately, and young, impressionable me was very nearly put off writing altogether for a long time. His work was instrumental in building up the great big shrug I give now when people try to look down at what I enjoy.

On to YOU!! MWAHAHAHA

Oh dear, haha! Okay, you may fire when ready!

What’s your day look like?

Coffee first, then dog walking, then a bit of social media. By then I’m usually on my third coffee or so, and I’ll write until I hit my quota, or until it’s time to walk the dog again. Most evenings I read and fluff about on the internet, or if I still have words left in me I’ll sit up late and squeeze them out.

Three days a week, I have The Day Job, which is at a well-known stationery shop, and helps fund the writing. It also forces me out of the house to interact with other humans, which is possibly a good thing. Possibly.

…Well, it helps me write dialogue, at the very least!

Family?

It’s just me, The Man, and Pilot, our Sprocker Spaniel. I have family down in Dorset, my mum and sisters, who I’m very close to despite the distance, and my lovely niece and nephew, both of whom have Auntie Neenor wrapped very firmly around their little fingers.

How do you juggle your family and everything else?

It’s not very difficult in my situation. Pilot and The Man are both sufficiently house broken, so that’s nice. Sometimes I curse The Day Job, just because I would always rather be writing, but then payday comes and I remember why I like it.

Last, what’s your playlist?

I listen to a lot of different things, depending on my mood. I like Florence + The Machine, Nero, Lorde, Fall Out Boy, Sia, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran, Kesha, Lady Gaga… At the moment I’m listening to a lot of Tobu, which always has a good rhythm for typing to!

Big thanks to Lorna George for stopping by. You can check out her links and more below.

Lorna George lives in a crooked little house in Norfolk with her husband, a lot of books, and a fifty year old begonia named Frank. She spends an inordinate amount of time dreaming up magic, dragons, and fearsome ladies, and has decided to try and make some sort of career from it by writing them down. She hopes this will give her a reasonable excuse when caught staring wistfully out of windows when she should be paying attention to the not-so-mystical "Real World".

Since she has become increasingly vulgar with age, she writes predominately New Adult stories, and despite what a lot of people seem to think, she seriously doubts she will ever grow out of fantasy.
She doesn't particularly want to.

The Darkling Chronicles Character Interview & Cover Reveal

Hey all!!

Sorry for the delay in... Well, anything. Last few weeks have been crazy for me. But, I'll explain it all in another post.  For now, enjoy a Character Interview with the voices in Tricia Zoeller's head. You'll find more information, and a link to the Rafflecopter, after the interviews.

Anka
What do you like most about Shadowland?

I love Pops’s shop, Chocolate Syncope. Even on my worst day, darkling chocolate can make things seem less bleak.

What do you like the most about the human plane?

Ben ☺ He makes the earth’s plane the best place to be. Also, I envy human’s freedom. We have three tyrants ruling us.

What attracted you to Ben?

His green eyes, his compassion, and his sense of responsibility for others.
Is there anything you would change in how you found him?

I wish we didn’t live on alternate planes and that he could always see me—even past his childhood years. I don’t mind he was my assignment. I’d rather have met him, than not, no matter the circumstances.

Bianca

What’s the best thing/worst thing about being a shadowcaster?

I like that I’m helping both humans and darklings. In shadowing them and casting, I’m protecting them as best I can from the harshest UV rays. And, I’m harnessing that energy for the benefit of all darklings. Also, it feels pretty good to be admired. All darklings respect the role we play in life.

Least favorite—I hate the helpless feeling I get when my energy isn’t enough. When Shadow Fever struck so many of my loved ones, I felt overwhelmed and powerless.

What do you look for in a mate?

I thought I knew…someone I’m comfortable with…someone I can trust. But then, I find myself drawn more and more to the unexpected. Someone who has an indomitable will, who doesn’t give up on anyone. Someone who challenges me.

Who’s your hero in life?

I admire my family members a great deal, but I’d have to say Pops is my favorite. He just is always there for me…laid-back, but protective.

Natcha

You’re very self-reliant. Does anything scare you?

Becoming insignificant to those I love. Or, losing them in some way. Some nights, I just can’t sleep worrying about my sister, Nalene.

If you had to live with a group rather going it alone, who would you choose—nymphs, satyrs, or darklings?

Satyrs come to mind first…they’re easy on the eyes. Of course, there is one particular darkling I find hot, but he’s fascinated by someone else. I don’t have the patience for the nonsense going on in Shadowland, to be honest.

Favorite place in Montenai?

The highest point of the Faunlier Mountains where I can literally walk through the clouds.

Biggest regret?

That maybe I’ve made the wrong decisions when raising Nalene—you know keeping her hidden, too sheltered.

LOVE

At the age of four, Patrick Benjamin Solomon becomes Anka Rehmling’s human charge. By eight, he can SEE her. At thirteen, he breaks her heart, and by eighteen, she finds herself fighting for his life.

As a darkling shadowcaster, Anka casts shadows in the human world, harnessing some of the earth’s UV light to bring back to Montenai—a world full of darklings, nymphs, satyrs, phantoms, and dragon lords. Her job is crucial to preserving the vitality and balance in her town of Shadowland. However, Anka has trouble following the strict rules set by the Shadowland Council, a ruling body comprised of three dragon lords.

The lords’ decree states all shadowcasters will abide by the rules or face the penalty of harsh punishment, banishment, or death. Torn between her world and Ben's, Anka must choose to defy the Council or turn her back on love.

COURAGE

As a darkling shadowcaster, Bianca Rehmling works under the three dragon lords of the Shadowland Council, casting shadows for her human charge on the earth’s plane and harnessing energy to bring back for the balance and wellbeing of her kind. She’s always been a law-abiding darkling, as opposed to her younger sister, Anka. When Anka broke shadowcasting rules over the summer, she suffered the wrath of the council, something Bianca never wants to witness again.

To protect her sister, Bianca harbors some dark secrets, ones that could cause the decline of Shadowland. When a deadly illness called Shadow Fever strikes the village, Bianca fears her own rule-breaking has caused a fatal imbalance in the world of Montenai. She hasn’t been doing her job, her duty, and the dragon lords suspect.

Family or duty? With loved ones suffering, and the dragon lords breathing down her neck, Bianca keeps her nymph friends close and her enemies…closer. When an unlikely ally offers to help, Bianca must decide whether to trust him or brave the heat alone.

Shadow Thief
The Darkling Chronicles #3
(Novella)

SURVIVAL

Natcha is a creature of fire, drawing in shadow to cloak herself from the dangers of the world. She has never known what she is or where she came from, but she knows her wings and claws make her different. The sea cliffs of Montenai are her home, the Aglatian Sea her playground, and the phantoms her family.

All her life, she has hidden in the Faunlier Mountains with her sister Nalene. Only the oath she swore as a child to a darkling father to watch over his son draws her toward the turmoil in Shadowland.

When unrest among the darklings, satyrs, nymphs, and dragon lords begins to bleed into her own life, Natcha wagers the welfare of one against the welfare of many. To protect all she holds dear, she must incur the wrath of Shadowland’s leaders and become… the Thief.

HOME

A family tragedy at the age of twelve thrusts Serena into the world of shadowcasting. She relishes the dragon lords’ protection and training but loves her new job and human charge even more.

Because of her great-great-grandfather’s alliance with a vicious nymph queen, Serena finds other Montenaians refuse to trust or accept her. It doesn’t help that she has the same birthmark and orange spark in her eyes as the relative who brought shame to the Brisson name.

Stepping through the portal to Paris allows Serena to escape her family’s reputation as well as her mother’s harsh traditions. Every day Serena pushes to be “worthy of the dragon,” regardless of her brother warning her the path leads to horrible loss.

For years, the lore of dragon and astrei has molded the practices and beliefs of Montenaians. No one has felt this more than the phantom, Serena. This Drifter’s history is the key to Shadowland’s fate. Can she protect them from a dangerous future and still find her way home?

AHA!!! I'm here to post!

Ok, I swear I've been trying to type up a post for... Well, weeks now.

See, as ya'll know I'm unemployed/self employed and trying to keep from relying wholly on my father. I'd had an almost job with a company, but they said 'F-U' when I ended up having a past.  'le gasp, you're not perfect?'

Well, I applied at another company and THEY liked me, and don't care about my past, only my current.  So what started as a few jobs locally, turned into a second week out of town, then a third week...

I got home this last Sunday, and I don't think they'll have me go anywhere else, plus I can't go anyplace as I have a show tomorrow.

But, the long hours [67.5 working hours in 4 days, lots of driving around, then more driving, followed by 51 working hours in 4 days, then more driving] have paid off and I'll be doing some updating this weekend, including a new phone, some new tires, oil change, new PC [the old one isn't doing so good] and the like.

All in all, its pretty good and I'm happy.

Except, that I'm three weeks behind in everything else AND trying to remember how to be at home, and active [this week, hasn't been that good at being active] so I can get back to business.  Also attempting to NOT spend all my phone.  I'm planning on putting some of it into a CD account for the Holidays, and perhaps another one for future shows..

Which brings me to exciting news.

WORLD CON 2015!!! You are looking at a vendor!!  That's right, I was accepted as a vendor at one of the bigger SciFi-Fantasy events of the year.  This thing travels around all over the place, and somehow its landed in Spokane.

Its called Sasquan, and its in August... And I'm STOKED!!! To be going. BIG chance to make contacts.

So, that's my life recently... Making some 'big ish bucks' which will mostly be spent in a few days, but also mostly on things I need [ok, I don't 'need' a new phone, but I think I'm making the best choice for the future, as my phone is starting to act up.]

What I Want...

I think I've figured out part of what I'm looking for in a guy, and why its so hard for me.

We all hear about how romance novels and fairy tales have ruined our expectations on men. And, I enjoy a good romance novel or fairy tale... But, those aren't the kinda guys I look for.  They're too perfect, to 'Oh, I caught me the uncatchable guy'.

No, I want a guy like... Philip Marlow, Mal Reynolds, Harry Dresden... The good hearted, hard boiled, teddy bear fighter.

The man whose flaws are obvious, who makes mistakes, but learns from them. He's not against being caught, and he'll be yours for life...

In some ways, what I want may be even harder to find in reality.  Which explains my singleness [if you don't count my three BFF's, who are almost like having three wives... Without the good stuff.]

Oh well, if it's meant to happen, it'll happen. Some day.

Day 1 of PAC Con Spokane

So, yesterday was the first day of PAC Con here in Spokane.  We set up our booths and had some people go through.  Today's supposed to be the busy day. [Hoping for lots of sales.]  But I've also got 2 panels.

Yesterday, I did my first panel EVER, as a speaker.  Turns out, of the three of us.. Only one had done them before.  I didn't die [YAY!!] and it was pretty fun.  I hope I didn't over talk, since it can be a problem I have.  But the other two seemed to like me well enough, and I'll have both of them in my next two panels.

There was some bad news I only just saw today.  A friend and fellow author's brother passed away a few days ago.  I'd met them both several years ago at SpoCon and likes both.  I know her health has been up and down, but her brother was her rock and it breaks my heart that he's gone.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I'll try and get a post for you about today, and hopefully have some pictures on Monday.

Who Am I... A Geek

So, today we'll look at 'Who I Am as a geek'.

It came to me finally, as I've been watching Doctor Who a bit more.

Honestly, I can't remember a time when Science Fiction and Fantasy wasn't apart of my life.  Growing up, we watched Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Star Trek movies.  On VHS Tape I have the old Hobbit Cartoon, and the amazing Lord of the Rings one that's got live action and animation.  The Last Unicorn, The Flight of Dragons and so many others.

I can't remember how old I was, I think about 13 or 14, when I found one of my favorite authors... David Eddings.

The Diamond Throne... It fascinated me and inspired me, I had to read more by him.

From Eddings, I picked up Terry Brooks and a few others, even Robert Jordan.  Never finished the Shannara Series.  Stopped when they went to the Air Ships.  Nothing against Brooks, but the series seemed to repeat.  I also enjoyed the Magic Landover stories.  I also stopped the Wheel of Time books at book 9.  It wasn't bad, just got tired of it after a little bit.

Later on I got into some scifi books, mostly Star Wars.  Young Jedi Academy books and the X-Wing ones are the best, to me.

I've written Fan Fiction for a few Anime's and Video Games, before I abandoned that for more 'serious' writing.

After a few years, I lost interest in anime and manga's.  Oddly, I'd like to still read them, but I don't have a lot of desire to actually sit down and read them.

I also got into comics, but they're damn expensive and keep changing storylines all the time.  So now, I just go about reading what's happened in comics and acting like I know lots more than I do.  ^^  Rather fun.

Over the years I've watched plenty of great SciFi shows, Babylon 5, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica [the original one], and others.  I've also watched some ok things, Buffy, Angel and Charmed.

Almost 3 years ago I started to play a game called Pathfinder.  Loved it really.  Its opened a new door to my geekiness.

There are plenty of books out there I've not read that I've been told I should read, and more than I wish I could read.

Took me all day to write this post.  Not sure why, except that Doctor Who was distracting me.

There's a lot more to write about me as a geek, more than can be contained in one blog.

Review: Troll or Derby by Red Tash

Troll Or DerbyTroll Or Derby by Red Tash
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow... Its been a while since books have yanked me in so far, that I almost have to pull myself back into the real world. Between Lady of the Veils and Troll or Derby, I've been reminded of why the very idea of Urban Fantasy, by my definition, appeals to me.

The reader is in for a unique, one of a kind trip out of the world we know and into a world filled with variations of the fairy world we all know and love. The trip Red Tash takes the reader on is fast paced and filled with action. Each switch between Deb and Harlow leaves you wanting to know more of what you'd left, before trapping you in where you're going. While different, I enjoyed the approach of switching back and forth, as the first person view gives you insight into both of these interesting characters that wouldn't be possible in any other writing style.

I picked up the book last night and started it this morning in bed. Each time I put it down was only because I had to be pulled to other things, literally forcing me to put the book down. Being out and about didn't stop me however from finishing it up when I could.

To say I enjoyed the book is putting it lightly. I truly loved this story.

Review: Lady of the Veils, by M.L. John

Lady of the VeilsLady of the Veils by M.L. John
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Be prepared for one hell of a ride, as you go from one world and into the next, on a whirlwind trip to battle the immortal. Watch as the world that our heroine knew before is pulled out from under her, forcing her to rebuild her very being into the woman she is destined to be.

I'm a lover of Fantasy, Adventure, Romance and Young Adult books, and this book gives the reader all of those things, in a fast paced roller coaster that leaves you wanting to know what happens next.
