Guest Post: Andy Peloquin

Aug 26 Kristey Carey Guest Post

I know a lot of authors that scoff at those of us who like to write while listening to music. These types of writers either write in total silence (something we parents don't often get), or they listen to more "refined" music--such as classical music.

Well, I may not have a "refined" palate when it comes to the music I listen to as I write, but it works for me!

Oddly enough, the music that works best is:
  • Electronic (Trance, Techno, Dubstep)
  • Pop (with a faster beat)

I know it seems odd, but it's AMAZING how easy it is for me to write when I have the right music playing!

Here are some of my favorite songs to write to:

  • Shatter Me by Lizzi Hale and Lindsey Stirling -- The haunting violin melodies are amazing, and the song has a lot of power. This is a song to listen to when I want an emotional moment in my writing.
  • Bangarang/Make it Bun Dem by Skrillex -- The driving beats of these songs get me in the mood for fast-paced action!
  • I'm an Albatraoz by AronChupa -- I mean that wicked driving beat, the odd singing, and the clever lyrics; how could you not love this song?
  • Unconditionally by Katy Perry -- Another powerfully moving song, this one for when I want my characters to have a defining/revealing moment.
  • Knock You Out by Bingo Players -- Fight scene music at its very best!
  • Get Up by Korn ft. Skrillex -- Yet another excellent song! This is what I use to write when my character is almost defeated by the villain, yet manages to rally and triumph at the last moment.
  • Welcome to the Machine by Pink Floyd -- This is a strange song, but it works for those quieter moments when the main character is relaxing, thinking deep thoughts, or the action is slow and intense.
  • What Now by Rihanna -- This is for those depressive, emotionally charged, and raw moments.
  • Human by Christina Perri -- Another great song for emotional moments.
  • Black Widow by Iggy and Rita Ora -- Powerful, angry music that is ideal for when my main character is angry at someone else.

Yes, my music taste may be a tad eclectic and unusual for most, but it works for me!

Tell me about your playlist. What do you like to listen to as you write?

Bio:
Andy Peloquin: Lover of All Things Dark and Mysterious

Andy Peloquin--a third culture kid to the core--has loved to read since before he could remember. Sherlock Holmes, the Phantom of the Opera, and Father Brown are just a few of the books that ensnared his imagination as a child.

When he discovered science fiction and fantasy through the pages of writers like Edgar Rice Burroughs, J.R.R Tolkien, and Orson Scott Card, he was immediately hooked and hasn't looked back since.

Andy's first attempt at writing produced In the Days: A Tale of the Forgotten Continent. He has learned from the mistakes he made and used the experience to produce Blade of the Destroyer, a book of which he is very proud.

Reading—and now writing—is his favorite escape, and it provides him an outlet for his innate creativity. He is an artist; words are his palette.

His website (http://www.andypeloquin.com) is a second home for him, a place where he can post his thoughts and feelings--along with reviews of books he finds laying around the internet.

He can also be found on his social media pages, such as:

10 Things You Need to Know About Me:
Hot wings, ALWAYS!
I never forget a face, but rarely remember a name.
I'm a head taller than the average person (I'm 6' 6")
Marvel > DC
I was born in Japan, and lived there until the age of 14.
Selena Gomez and Five Finger Death Punch are both in my playlist.
Aliens are real, but it's self-centered of us to believe that they would come to visit Earth.
Watching sports: suck. Playing sports: EPIC!
I earned a purple belt in Karate/Hapkido/Taekwondo.
I dislike most Christmas music, aside from Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Reviews:
"Creative, gritty, and beautifully dark...fantasy addicts will love it!" -- Peter Story, author of Things Grak Hates -- http://peterjstory.com/
"The fantasy world has a compelling new antihero…the Hunter will terrify and captivate you." - Eve A Floriste, author of Fresh Cut

"From the first words on the page this fantasy holds the reader spellbound even after the book is finished…his character is very well-defined even if his past is a mystery. Root for an assassin? Oh, yes, one must!" -- Carol Conley, for InDTale Magazine

Scared Shitless

Two posts in one day, it's is a miracle.

Tomorrow morning I'll go down town and get my table all set up for WorldCon. And the whole idea of world con scares me to death.

Not because I don't believe I have the talent to be there. Not because I don't think I have the quality to be there. No, The reason this event scares me so much is because it will not be hundreds of people walking past my booth with the potential to be customers, it will be thousands of people.

This is a big event. It has been held in cities like Tokyo, London, Sydnee and others around the world. And here it is in my own backyard. On top of all the big name companies that had a chance to get their foot in the store I was given an opportunity as well. Nothing I've been to compares to the size of this event.

I think I just needed to get this out into the world. I'm stressed, I'm scared, and I know once everything gets going it'll calm down for me. Once I get into that convention center and take part in this event, I won't be quite so scared.

Busy of Late

Life has been a tad weird lately.

1: My father had a Heart attack that was swiftly followed by triple bypass surgery.

2: Money got kinda tight [after the afore mentioned heart attack] and our wifi has been gone since a bit after Memorial Day.

3: This lack of WiFi has killed most of my creativity, as I can't go out when I want to work and stay at home when I want to play. I must instead do all of it 'out'.

4: WorldCon, called Sasquan this year, is in Spokane and I have a table there. Is a HUGE FREAKING DEAL and I'm all a flutter about it.

I'm hoping that September will bring about the return of WiFi and some normalcy, but who knows. In the mean time, I may try and post even just a little something daily. Its hard to keep up on something where you know you get views, but no one seems to want to talk or post with you.

Anywho, I hope you're all having a good day and look forward to sharing WorldCon with you.
